Twenty Somethings: You Don't Have as Much Time as You Think
You have a shit job because you just got out of college. Because you don’t know what you want. Because you don’t know your worth yet. Because you’re still young.
You’re broke because it’s the norm. Because all your friends are broke. Because your family enables you to be dependent. Because you don’t manage money well. Because of your shit job. Because you’re still young.
You’re dating weirdos because it’s ok to have low standards at this age. Because you’re not settling down yet. Because you don’t know what to do with yourself when you’re alone. Because you don’t know any better. Because you’re still young.
Your friends are losers. They have shit jobs. They’re broke. They’re also dating weirdos.
You’re destructive. You wake up with hangovers. You spend entire days in bed. You waste time. You don’t follow through. You don’t think much of it. Because fuck, you’re still young.
You’re stagnant. You don’t know which direction to take so you don’t take any. You’re paralyzed by possibilities.
You think you have it figured out one day, and the next your world crumbles around you. Repeat.
You’re frivolous and fickle and you don’t know what you’re doing. But it’s cool, guys. You’re still young.
Blink you’re twenty. Blink you’re twenty five. Blink you’re thirty. Blink you’re fifty, telling twenty somethings they’ve still got plenty of time to screw things up. How many times has someone dismissed your lack of direction with “It’s ok, you’re still young?” Until one day you look back and wonder where all the time went.
You know that grown up life you imagine forming post twenties? Work you love. A house to yourself. Money. Tangible successes. Does this grown up life just appear when you come of age? Or, do you grow out of your twenties and melt down one day in your cubicle because you’re not living the life you expected? That! And you’ve just spent an entire decade not taking yourself seriously. Oops.
Dear society, stop taking away our twenty something accountability. Dear twenty somethings, this decade is not expendable. We do not have as much time as we think.
Still not convinced? This woman will blow your twenty something mind.
